At just 10 years old, Pathma’s world changed forever. After losing her father and being abused by an older man, her mother—overwhelmed and unable to care for her and her siblings—made the heartbreaking decision to let a probation officer place her in a children’s home. It’s been over a decade since she last saw her siblings.
When she turned 20, Pathma was placed with a foster family—but instead of a fresh start, she was mistreated and forced to flee, returning to the safety of the children’s home she once knew.
Now 22, Pathma is ready to take back her story. A Sinhala-speaking Buddhist who also speaks English, she learned about the DCI Dental Surgery Assistant Program from her home’s matron and from inspiring graduates who came before her. For the first time in years, she feels hopeful.
