I’m Wasu, an 18-year-old joining the DCI Dental Surgery Assistant Program from a local Sri Lankan children’s home.

My childhood was rocky, to say the least. My mother’s attempt at abortion and her disdain toward me made life challenging from the start. But amidst the turmoil, my father’s love was my anchor until our family dissolved when I was just five.

I bounced between relatives, living with my father until I turned 13, then briefly with my aunt. At 14, I reunited with my mother and ended up in the children’s home due to unresolved family issues. Despite fleeting attempts to find stability, I always found myself back there.

As a Buddhist who speaks Singhalese, education wasn’t always easy. High school posed its own set of challenges, but witnessing a former student’s success in the dental assistant program sparked something within me. The promise of financial independence motivated me to pursue this path.

In my free time, you’ll find me immersed in music or spiking a volleyball. These simple joys keep me grounded amidst my studies and responsibilities.
