I’m Dilukshiya, a 19-year-old from the picturesque Henfold Tea Estate in Nuwara Eliya. I’m currently enrolled in the DCI Dental Surgery Assistant Program, and let me tell you, it’s been quite a journey getting here.

Growing up in Nuwara Eliya with my parents, older brother, and younger sister has been both comforting and challenging. My mother’s busy overseeing 12 children from our estate, while my father works hard at a coffee shop to make ends meet. We’re Hindu and speak Tamil at home, adding a vibrant cultural touch to our everyday lives.

Now, I didn’t finish high school, but that hasn’t stopped me from dreaming big. You see, I’ve always had this burning desire to become a dental assistant. It all started when I saw a friend from my village, who had completed the DSA program, blossom into a new person over the past couple of years. Witnessing her transformation ignited a fire within me, and I just knew I had to pursue this path.

My dreams stretch far beyond the tea estate. I dream of owning a house in Colombo one day and supporting my sister’s education once I’ve completed the program and saved up some money. It’s these aspirations that keep me going, no matter how tough things get.

When I’m not buried in textbooks or assisting in dental procedures, you can find me lost in the world of music or buried nose-deep in a good book. It’s in these moments of leisure that I find solace and recharge for the challenges ahead.
