At just 3 years old, Sandeepani lost her mother. Not long after, her father suffered a mental breakdown that left him unable to care for her or her brother. Separated from family, they both grew up in different children’s homes, learning to navigate life largely on their own.

Now 18, Sandeepani is ready for something more. A Sinhala-speaking Buddhist, she found her way to the DCI Dental Surgery Assistant Program through the matron at her children’s home. For the first time, she feels excited about what’s ahead.

“This is my chance,” she says. “I want to learn everything I can. One day, I want to take care of my father.”

Despite all the pain and distance, her love for her family runs deep. She’s determined to turn this opportunity into a career—not just for herself, but for the people she loves.

In her free time, Sandeepani finds comfort and joy in drawing and singing—creative moments where she feels free, expressive, and full of life.
